Since its birth as a luxury villa rental agency in 1998, the Elite Havens Group has evolved its offering both vertically and horizontally complementing the growth in the market. By building on its core competencies and adding new and carefully targeted disciplines, the Group has expanded over the last thirteen years to become Bali’s largest integrated property firm.

Between them, the Elite Havens Group’s autonomous but interrelated companies and divisions now possess the experience and expertise to manage the entire life-cycle of a property – from structuring the investment or real estate purchase through to operational set up, then branding and marketing the finished product as a fully serviced, luxury villa rental.

And, change being the only constant in life, the evolution of the Group continues. Building on its marketing platform, Elite Havens has recently set up a joint-venture with the founders of Asia Hotels and creators of the first pan-Asia, independent villa guide while, on the property front, an alliance with Knight Frank will showcase Bali’s best real estate to an international audience.

In the beginning

Originally operating under the name Bali Homes – the company offering the crème of Bali’s then nascent villa market to discerning clients from around the world – by 2001 the organisation had grown sufficiently in line with demand to open an additional company while rebranding the original, adopting the name Elite Havens for real estate and rentals, and opening Bali Homes Management (BHM) to provide operational management solutions for overseas owners. On behalf of each individual property owner, BHM assumes all responsibility for every aspect of a villa’s logistical and commercial operations – staffing, training, service standards, security and maintenance.

One of the things that set BHM apart was that it was born from an agent’s perspective, so from the outset it sought to be as agency-friendly as possible. BHM, now in conjunction with its new sister company, Marketing Villas, promotes its portfolio across an expansive range of third party travel agents from across the world.

One event leads to another

Growing demand for destination events soon saw the need for the establishment of an event management company, and in the spring of 2006 Elite Events was born. Trained in event delivery, procedural accuracy and accountability, the Elite Events team ensures an exceptional level of service and commitment to meet the high expectations of their clients. Event hosting can be a great source of revenue for villa owners and the events team provides design advice in the development of event-suitable properties and assists in working out a sustainable revenue solution for those already on the ground. The Elite Events team also works in harmony with the rental and marketing facets of the Group helping to ensure a professional integration with this important niche market.

Definitive development

In order to satisfy an increased demand for well structured investments in Bali, the Group diverged further by establishing a division for development consultancy, Elite Havens Developments.

The establishment of a bespoke construction and property development branch – designed to ensure professional delivery by managing the activities of third party specialist consultants from concept through to procurement, delivery and operation – signified that the Group were now in a position to define villas. Drawing on BHM’s invaluable experience in the commercial configuration of high-end residential properties and Elite Havens’ detailed knowledge of the rental market, Elite Havens Developments can confidently advise clients on how to develop their investment in order to obtain the maximum rental yield and enhance resale value.

To the future

As the waves of globalisation wash upon every shore and markets stretch across many boundaries, Elite Havens, along with partners who share their vision of the future, have created both a new association and a new company.

The new company is joint venture, Marketing Villas Limited – a sophisticated platform that offers world class marketing and distribution solutions to service the three parties it serves: villa owners, travel agents and rental guests. Marketing Villas has been set up with Singapore-based independent villa guide Private Homes & Villas, created by the people who were also the originators of the asiahotels.com brand.

Founded on the realisation that there is much untapped regional potential, Marketing Villas draws on each company’s respective and unique strengths; the Elite Havens Group provides Marketing Villas with expertise in developing a distinctive brand identity for villa clients and access to its extensive network of travel agents and guests, whilst Private Homes & Villas contributes its sophisticated web-based distribution and customer service software platform unleashing all sorts of efficiencies. Marketing Villas, and the various brands it operates, represent a diverse range of properties – from absolute beachfront to rural retreats – in Bali, Lombok, Phuket, Koh Samui and Sri Lanka.

As property values in Bali rise, and the private villa market continues to become more sophisticated Elite Havens Sales remains a core component of the Group; and looking to enhance their offering overseas, the sales team recently formed a unique association with Knight Frank – the world’s largest privately owned global real estate agency – resulting in their rebranding as ‘Elite Havens Knight Frank’. This association has enabled Elite Havens to better showcase Bali’s finest properties to an international audience, and act as the interface for luxury villa owners and investors requiring top class professional advice.

When Elite Havens was first conceived, its slogan was “Paradise Found…”. Now, with the Group’s involvement in every facet of villa development both in the local market and, increasingly in the regional one, that slogan has confidently evolved into “Defining villas…”. Where next? Looking around the region, both Cambodia and Vietnam are starting to emerge as promising contenders.

Perhaps it’s not what you’d expect to find along dusty Jalan Petitenget, but follow the private access road until you meet the sparkling Indian Ocean and there you’ll find the latest hot addition to the Seminyak scene – Potato Head Beach Club.

This Balinese sister of the successful and sophisticated Jakarta Potato Head opened in December 2010. Set on a secluded stretch of Seminyak Beach and designed in a minimalist, uber-contemporary style, Potato Head Beach Club greets with an infinity-edge pool seemingly merging into the pounding surf and surrounded by an ocean of blue daybeds. A stylish lounge-bar-restaurant area dissected by a long marble bar sprawls over an extensive split level timber deck crafted from recycled boats. The venue’s open-air design maximises sea views, natural light and fresh breezes, while the distinctive multi-coloured vintage wood shutters – also a feature at the Jakarta venue – provide a totally avant garde look.

There’s a faint whiff of exclusivity – this being a beach club – and standards are high, but the overall concept is relaxed, casual and chilled: so relaxed that a day is easily spent enjoying a leisurely lunch, a laze around the pool and, armed with a cooling Potato Head cocktail, a front row seat at the mango-hued sunset spectacular. Cool sounds from an established crew of international DJs helps set the evening vibe, before its time for dinner.

This casual element is also reflected in the menus with their focus on global comfort food – albeit gourmet – using the finest, freshest ingredients for outstanding quality. Classic favorites include roasted baby organic chicken with herbs and mashed potato, prime steak frites and Tasmanian lamb rack. Be sure to leave room for the wicked puddings like oven baked apple and mixed berry crumble or warm sticky date pudding.

Cocktails are a Potato Head trademark. Inspirational signatures are assembled by a British mixologist, mouth-wateringly infused with fresh quality ingredients. The Punch tipple of bygone days has been brought bang up to date with recipes such as island-style ‘Mexican Tea-Key-Lah’ – perfect for sharing with friends at sunset. Other unique creations include the refreshingly tangy ‘Kookaburra,’ with lemongrass gin and homemade vanilla sugar ‘lovingly muddled’ with fresh mint leaves and lime and layered with passion-fruit and vanilla foam.

Potato Head is still evolving and two more restaurants – seafood Asian style and French with a Japanese twist – are due to open imminently. Plans are also afoot to serve breakfast-brunches alongside the lunch and dinner menus already on offer. Regular hosted events include monthly hip dance parties.

Potato Head Beach Club is already attracting an eclectic bunch; from tourists to business execs to families – kids love the pool and lawns, not to mention the food! After a few blissful hours at Potato Head it’s hard to decide what’s more chilled – the guests or the sensational cocktails.

To own one’s own tropical island paradise is perhaps one of our most common dreams, and it is rare indeed to come across an opportunity to turn that dream into a reality.

This breathtakingly beautiful island, fringed by white sand beaches and sparkling clear blue sea, is one of the last islands available within easy reach of Bali and Lombok.

Nestled in a sheltered archipelago in a pretty bay on the south-western tip of Lombok, only 15 minutes by boat from the mainland, this is a very desirable location.

From Bali, the island is reached in a matter of minutes by helicopter and in less than an hour by speedboat. From mainland Lombok it’s a mere four kilometres by boat, affording easy access by road to Lombok International Airport and the shopping and markets of Mataram.

This private island is currently operated as a simple bungalow resort and is also home to a turtle hatchery. It offers great opportunity for improvement or redevelopment within its 12.5 Hectares (about 31 acres).

In addition to ten charming cottages, seven attractive bungalows and a restaurant, the island’s infrastructure includes two generators, a jetty and three boats with 40-horse power outboard motors.

Less than three hectares of the island is currently built upon, leaving more than nine hectares of land dotted with mature trees completely untouched.

Surrounding seas are crystal clear and calm, making this a paradise for the whole gamut of marine sports, from wind surfing to parasailing, game fishing and scuba diving on the island’s coral reef.

This unique combination makes the island suitable for use as an exclusive private residence, a fashionable resort, or a high-end villa development.

Price available upon application.

Diaries at the ready! Bali’s annual ‘I’m An Angel Charity Auction and Gala Dinner’ will be held on 18th June this year, as opposed to its normal slot in August. Now in its ninth year, this popular event has become a firm fixture on Bali’s social calendar. Giving local and international businesses the opportunity to get together and give back to Bali. This year’s prizes and auction donations include two-night stays at The Istana, Villa Kubu, Pushpapuri, Hansa and Belong Dua and much, much more.

‘I’m An Angel’ is a Bali-based non-profit foundation created in 2003 by a few determined individuals to provide sustainable development for communities challenged by resource scarcity and limited economic potential. The charity works alongside local communities to improve access to health facilities, provide clothing, school equipment and education (especially health education to help stop the growth of sexually transmitted disease, which has become a growing concern in Bali), and to improve rural infrastructures.

Over the years, the ‘I’m An Angel Annual Charity Auction’ has been successful in driving fundraising up from US$20,000 in 2003 to US$97,000 in 2010, benefitting over 24,000 underprivileged Balinese women and children as a result. Funded programmes ultimately aim to empower local communities to work together to find solutions to the problems they face and help them to guide themselves out of poverty.

This year, the event – due to be held on Saturday 18th June at Ku De Ta – hopes to go even further and, with the sustained support of dedicated fundraisers, build on its previous success. A sumptuous six course dinner – prepared by no less than six internationally renowned chefs – will be served and fantastic prizes and auction items will be up for grabs. So start saving and book a table early to make sure you don’t miss your chance to give something back to this very special island!

For more information see www.imanangel.org or for reservations, email info@kudeta.net.

The beauty of Bali’s villas is that they are diverse not only in size, style and design, but also in character and ambiance – matching the most discerning expectations and tastes. Elite Havens introduces four newly available villas, Hansa, East Residence and Spa, Surya Damai and Shamira, that follow this trend. Each with their own unique style, they do however share common features; drop-dead gorgeous and meticulously designed in exquisite good taste, with luxurious comforts and hand-picked staff offering genuine Balinese hospitality.

All four are in villages surrounded by a typical Bali landscape of rice fields and farming communities, along the wildly beautiful southwest coastline – its string of beaches boasting world-class surf breaks. Whichever villa appeals, each helps you get the very most from your idyllic ‘Island of the Gods’ stay.

Villa Hansa

Gorgeous Villa Hansa rests amongst pretty riverside gardens dominated by an 18-metre infinity-edge pool merging with terraced rice-fields. Wonderfully relaxed and zen-infused, this deluxe escape blends contemporary and traditional architectural styles.

This four-bedroom property, decorated with Indonesian antiques, immerses guests in Bali’s spiritual and cultural traditions; bedrooms are themed after Hindu Gods and a yoga room awaits for quiet contemplation. Eco-conscious Hansa maintains recycling and biodegrable household systems and meals are prepared with locally-sourced organic food. Only 300 metres from Pererenan beach, Villa Hansa is a surfer’s dream!

www.hansabali.com

Villa East Residence and Spa

Palatial yet delightfully welcoming, East Residence and Spa blends luxury western comforts and contemporary Indonesian design with traditional Balinese flourishes. Four of the five ensuite bedrooms feature generous-sized balconies to savour Canggu’s rice-field views, while a romantic one-bedroom rainforest cottage rests privately within the grounds.

Centre-stage of the stunningly landscaped, terraced gardens is a 20-metre infinity-edge pool, dramatically dropping away to a riverbank of rainforest foliage and waterfall. With a gloriously peaceful, open-sided living pavilion, a private spa pavilion where traditional treatments are offered by two professional therapists, and three riverside gazebos, this cherished home provides a restorative and rejuvenating sanctuary.

www.eastresidence.com

Villa Surya Damai

This congenial and serene five-bedroom villa with 18-metre swimming pool and private tennis court rests amongst the glorious rice terraces of Umalas village on Bali’s south-west coast.

Built to the design of a traditional Balinese family compound home, Villa Surya Damai’s large, open-sided living room and charming thatched bedroom pavilions are set within an enchanting walled garden, along one side of which basks the irresistible pool. The villa effortlessly blends colonial elegance with tropical ambiance while providing all the modern comforts required for a memorable, relaxing stay. An excellent team of welcoming staff, as well as a complimentary car and driver, take care of guests’ every need.

Villa Surya Damai is ideally positioned just a 15-minute walk from the nearest surf beach and yet only a short drive from Seminyak’s shopping and nightlife.

www.villasuryadamai.com

Villa Shamira

Enjoying a tranquil village setting along Bali’s south-west coast, four-bedroomed Villa Shamira is a much-loved family home that’s given years of joy to its owners. This stylish yet utterly casual hideaway welcomes with a 12-metre swimming pool, an extensive array of relaxing indoor–outdoor living and dining areas and a team of delightful, long-term staff who are almost part of the family.

Set within lush tropical gardens and surrounded by rice fields and farming communities, Villa Shamira is a ten-minute stroll from Canggu Beach, renowned for its excellent surfing and spectacular sunsets, and only a few kilometers from the shops and restaurants of sophisticated Seminyak.

One can forgive the occasional visitor, who longs for the old legendary Warisan, who laments the passing of the foie gras, for which the eatery was justly famous.

However, they mourn too quickly: for those of us in the know there has been a renaissance of everything that was, and more besides, and has taken on the Quebecois name of Métis – meaning one of mixed parentage.

Maybe the Métis story is just another example of the often allegorical nature of life in Bali – for the people who made the Warisan name world-famous for gourmet cuisine neither owned the premises nor the celebrated name.

However, their inheritance was their reputation. An asset which after all, is dependent not in the slightest on bricks and mortar or a trade name. When the lease fell due, a new beginning beckoned.

So a more spacious, more contemporary establishment rose amid the Batubelig rice paddy fields.

Drive into Métis and a huge improvement is immediately apparent – there is plenty of parking. At first glance the building itself (geometric Bali-modern minimalist perhaps one could describe it as) appears a little soulless compared to the charmingly funky, favourite-old-shoe ambience that typified the former establishment.

However, upon entering the restaurant proper, any doubts as to the wisdom of the move are quickly dispelled. The extra space is as welcome as an upgrade from Business Class to First.

But there is much that is familiar, the U-shape dining area has been retained, the ricefield views remain, and, sacrebleu, it’s the same which made Said and Doudou, justifiably proud and celebrated up the road.

A glance at the menu is reassuring, for all the old favourites are there, including the aforementioned foie gras and duck confit. Chef and owner Doudou Tourneville says that the new menu retains roughly half that found on the old.

Indeed, a closer look reveals some intriguing new additions.

Those in the know report that the White Rucola Salad with Feta, the Moroccan Rack of Lamb Mechou and the Fresh Scallops and Prawns Provençal are quickly assuming legendary status.

A French friend with more than a passing acquaintance with Les Etoiles Michelin is adamant. “Métis,” he says, “has taken the enjoyment of food in Bali to a whole different level.”

The wine list has benefited from the appointment of Kurniawan Eko Putro as sommelier. Formerly of The Legian, he has crafted a list of some of the most interesting wines of both the new and old worlds.

Another appointment which has strengthened Métis’ claim to pre-eminence on the island is that of pastry chef Gilles Delaloy who brings an immense amount of international experience to Métis. He has worked at New York’s Waldorf Astoria, the Ritz Carlton Millennia in Singapore, Doors Restaurant in Istanbul, the Datai in Malaysia, Las Ventanas al Paraiso at Cabo in Mexico, and the Novikov in Moscow. His dessert recipes have appeared in New York Magazine.

His addition to the Métis crew goes beyond the desserts and pastries found on the menu. Métis has its own patisserie and chocolaterie with every offering made on the premises.

It’s somewhat surprising to learn that Métis has covers for 350 guests. While infinitely more comfortable and spacious than its predecessor, it still retains that sense of intimacy so essential to a memorable dining experience.

Perhaps it’s because Métis has a private dining room upstairs which seats up to 120 in comfort.

The rationale, of course, is to allow larger parties to enjoy themselves independently. Despite the physical separation, the à la carte dining experience is the same; the restaurant does not offer a buffet option for groups.

Unlike its predecessor, Métis has a large and expansive comfortable bar/lounge area, and a terrace which is sited to the south west, ideal for enjoying the sunset and the DJs who often spin.

More of Métis can be seen at www.metisbali.com, and bookings are accepted on +62 361 737 888. Don’t forget to try the hot raspberry fois gras…

What happens when a couple with a lifelong love of and deep roots in Indonesia decide to build a villa in Bali? Something magical is created and the villa becomes a special treasure with an indescribable aura to be shared and enjoyed with others. Enter the Longhouse and you cannot help but feel the affection and care that has gone into every detail.

The Nederkoorn family first came to Java in the late 1800’s when Robin’s grandfather worked as an engineer building the narrow gauge railway. Robin’s father, Thys, was born in Bandung in 1917 and in his early life worked as an officer for KPM, sailing between the small islands of east of Java. Robin himself was born in Singapore after Thys returned from his wartime naval commission with his new bride, Anne.

Fast forward to 1979. Robin and his American wife, Linda, arrive in Singapore with their baby daughter. From the time the young family came to Southeast Asia, they traveled extensively through the region, but particularly in Indonesia, where on several occasions the entire family accompanied Thys to revisit many of the far flung memories of his youth.

Of all the wonderful and exciting places that Linda and Robin had been, it was Bali that they chose in which to create their dream. Step into the Longhouse. From the early morning vision of the holy mountain, Gunung Agung, floating serenely on the horizon to punctuate the Longhouse’s celestial view, to the whispers of the gamelan floating up from the village below each evening, the Longhouse gently coaxes you into your own love affair with Bali and with Indonesia.

Art and artifacts throughout the villa beckon you to explore a world you may not know. Simply enjoy the beauty, or if you wish, learn more. Information can be found in the books created and collected just for you and from the staff justly proud and happy to share their culture with you.

The philosophy of the Longhouse and each of the staff is to create the opportunity for you to feel and experience a small segment of Balinese life. Learn to weave the palm leaf offering baskets found in every home shop and car, go to the market with their chef and come back to try the essentials of Balinese cooking, fly traditional kites on their breezy hillside. You can weave your life into Bali’s gentle rhythms.

Beyond the five star comfort, facilities and amenities found in so many of Bali’s luxurious villas (and this the Longhouse has in abundance) the owners offer to share with you a glimpse of their love of Bali and the surrounding islands. Each of the six bedroom suites is themed after a different island in the archipelago and incorporates native crafts and indigenous materials from that island. The Longhouse is full of surprises and opportunities. As so many guests have said: staying at the Longhouse is a wonderful experience they will never forget.

Oscar Wilde said, “I have the simplest tastes. I´m always satisfied with the best.”

For those seeking a high quality residence in the heart of Sanur, Villa Upama is a three-bedroom property definitely worth consideration. Freehold tenure is available, a rarity in this location.

Located behind an inconspicuous wall off a quiet street just back from the beach, the first time visitor is surprised by the feeling of space, symmetry and balance that unfolds as they enter through a discreet wooden door.

Initial impressions are of a curving, sleek and spacious two-level structure with a striking roof-line made from hand-beaten copper tiles overlooking a free form pool (which resembles a tranquil lily pond) and large guest villa.

The interior designer’s experience and good taste enhance the architect’s clean and elegant lines. Contemporary and understated, their choice of colours, shapes, artwork, decorations and furniture seem to be made for each other.

The dominant tones are of cool glass, brushed stainless steel, and warm, rich reclaimed teak, set off by a backdrop of neutral sand and stone hues.

The ground floor of the master villa is given over to entertaining and relaxing.

Extensive decking overlooks the tropical garden and pool. A spacious poolside relaxation area with a hanging, oversize sofa and suite of easy chairs, and a more formal adjacent sitting area can be closed off and air conditioned by huge floor-to-ceiling curved hanging doors.

The dining area mirrors the formal sitting area, with curved hanging doors which can be left open to enjoy the breeze, or closed off allowing the dining area to be air conditioned.

The villa would not be complete without a cigar room, study, charming below-ground wine cellar with wine tasting area, and a state-of-the-art serving kitchen(with the latest in Miele wall ovens and gas hobs from Germany).

Upstairs is the master bedroom and a second bedroom. Both have curved windows which slide open to take advantage of the breeze. Both bedrooms have their own adjoining bathrooms and dressing rooms and there’s a delightful roof garden.

Across the pool is a guest villa with its own spacious living area, en suite dressing and bathrooms, with a rooftop lush tropical garden and a shady area with two massage tables.

An individual with an eye for detail will quickly recognise see that construction, finishing and interior decoration is simply superb. No short cuts have been taken here. Likewise, fixtures and fittings – light switches, power points, faucets and bathroom and kitchen hardware are all German or Scandinavian in origin.

Furniture is bespoke; drawers glide effortlessly; doors close tightly and silently.

There is much, too, which is not immediately apparent. The architect was tasked with ensuring that environmental sustainability was an integral part of his design.

The teak used for the tongue and groove floors, for example, is timber reclaimed and refurbished from decommissioned traditional wooden schooners.

The walls are double cavity which keep the buildings cooler and reduce external noise.

Tempered safety glass is used throughout.

The air-conditioning system is integrated; outlets are at floor level and the thermostats sited at head height so that energy is not wasted cooling areas with high ceilings.

The pool is completely chemical-free; it uses a sophisticated charcoal filtering system.

Villa Upama’s location is also a significant plus for those who aspire not only to a tropical lifestyle, but also to a neighbourhood which retains much of the traditional mystique and peaceful, tranquil ambience that has made Bali so justly famous.

Sanur is still administered along time-honoured village lines by high caste Balinese families that have lived here for generations.

While facilities for expatriate residents are extensive—there is a wide choice of fine restaurants, well-stocked supermarkets, bars and boutiques—Sanur is still an oasis of the Bali of old.
